How Do Edibles Work?

As you may have noticed, infused cannabis products are available in many various forms including: lotions, edibles, liquids, vaporizers, capsules, and more. Most people don’t fully understand how these various forms of products work to provide effects on the body. Bioavailability is the term used to refer to the degree and rate at which cannabis (or any substance) is absorbed by the body’s circulatory system.

Bioavailability varies considerably from person to person based on metabolic rate, sleep cycles, age, health of the gastrointestinal tract, and other factors. All of these greatly affect a product’s potency, onset time, and duration. The following table summarizes the differences between the three primary ways that cannabis can be processed by your body.

Digested by the gastrointestinal system (cookies, snacks, etc.) and processed in the liver before making it to the bloodstream.

  • Onset: 30min – 3 hrs

  • Duration: 6 – 8 hrs

  • Bioavailability: 8 – 15%

Products (logzenges, candies, mints, etc.) are dissolved in the mouth and enters bloodstream through the mucous membranes.

  • Onset: 15 – 60 mins

  • Duration: 4 – 6 hrs

  • Bioavailability: 6 – 20%

Vaporized or smoked cannabis is inhaled into the lungs where it is then absorbed into the bloodstream.

  • Onset: Immediate

  • Duration: 2 – 4 hrs

  • Bioavailability: 10 – 35%

What is CBD?

Our CBD products are made from high-CBD, low-THC varieties of cannabis. CBD is one of the many chemical compounds (cannabinoids) that naturally occur in cannabis plants. While THC is the most famous of the cannabinoids for its ability to get us high, CBD is a rapidly rising star for its capacity to deliver mental and physical benefits without the giggles, paranoia, or couch-lock.

CBD’s reported benefits include relief from anxiety, chronic pain, stress relief, menstrual cramps, insomnia, nausea, seizures, inflammation, and plain old moodiness.

As marijuana continues its march into the mainstream, CBD has emerged as an easy entryway for those who want to dip a toe into the wellness benefits of weed, but may be skeptical of getting stoned.
